Drinking tea is a very old tradition which has started from at least five thousand years in both India and China. Nowadays, tea is the 2nd most consumed beverage worldwide after water.
Green tea is produced from steaming the leaves of the green plant Camellia sinensis.
Therefore, green tea is reported to contain the highest amounts of potent anti-oxidants known as polyphenols; green tea is particularly rich is a subgroup of polyphenols called catechins or epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG).
Anti-oxidants are natural scavengers for free radicals which can destroy cells of your body and causes DNA alternation as well.
Scientists believe that polyphenols in green tea play an important role in prevention of cancer; furthermore, they suggest that polyphenols can destroy cancer cells and prevent their development.
Despite the anti-cancer preventive effect of green tea is well proven in laboratory studies, National Cancer Institute and American Association for Cancer Research have reported that studies performed on humans are still inconclusive.
In fact, there is a lot of controversy about therapeutic uses of green tea and prostate cancer, may be due to dietary, environmental and population variations.
But in a large clinical research performed in China, scientists found that the prostate cancer risk can be decreased with high consumption of green tea.

- If you really enjoy drinking a cup of green tea, it is okay, because scientists found that desirable amount of green tea daily intake is three to five cups (approximately 1200 ml/per day), this amount contains at least 250 mg/per day of catechins.
Of course, green tea free of caffeine is highly recommended. A recent study revealed that soaking green tea for five minutes in water can release up to 80% of its content of catechins. On the other hand, iced tea contains minor amounts of catechins.
- In addition to therapeutic effect of green tea, you can gain a lot of benefits from drinking green tea regularly and moderately. Actually, anti-oxidant property of green tea can reduce your risk for developing atherosclerosis and coronary heart diseases. Plus green tea can effectively lower your total blood cholesterol and raise your HDL “good” cholesterol as well.

Any side effects of Green Tea?
Generally, green tea is safe when used in moderation, but you might suffer from some liver problems, like abdominal pain, jaundice and dark urine, if you consumed concentrated amounts of green tea extracts.
Green tea contains caffeine which can cause you to suffer from insomnia, headaches, irritability, stomach spasms, heart palpitation, drowsiness, nausea, diarrhea, and urine frequency.
Furthermore, green tea can increase the blood coagulation, as it contains small amounts of vitamin K.
